Prayagraj, formerly known as Allahabad, holds a prestigious position in India’s cultural, religious, and historical landscape. Renowned as the cultural and spiritual hub of India, it is one of the most significant Hindu pilgrimage sites. The city is globally famous for hosting the grand Kumbh Mela, the world’s largest religious gathering, held every 12 years, along with the Ardh Kumbh (every 6 years) and Magh Mela (annually) on the banks of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers.
Beyond its religious prominence, Prayagraj is a center for education, administration, and commerce. It houses the Allahabad High Court, Public Service Commission, and major government offices. The city’s rich heritage, with landmarks like Akbar’s Fort, Anand Bhavan, and Jhunsi’s Guptakaalin Fort, adds to its historic significance.
To regulate the city’s rapid urbanization, population growth, and infrastructural development, the Prayagraj Master Plan was introduced. This comprehensive urban planning initiative ensures organized land-use distribution, infrastructure upgrades, transportation expansion, and environmental conservation, making the city more sustainable and efficient.
Evolution of the Prayagraj Urban Development Plan
- Master Plan 1967-1991:
- The first urban development framework to streamline infrastructure and land-use distribution.
- Approved under Government Order No. 1730/37-3-39/Ni.Ka.Vi/68, dated 09.10.1973.
- Amendment Plan 1989-2001:
- Introduced to address urban challenges and accommodate increasing population needs.
- Approved under Government Order No. 3889/9 -Aa-3-95-II Maha./P-7, dated 09.11.1995.
- Prayagraj Master Plan 2021:
- Implemented to rectify land-use discrepancies, prevent illegal encroachments, and enhance infrastructure.
- Expanded planned area from 21,689.53 hectares to 30,917.38 hectares.
- Included 541 villages within an 8 km radius of Prayagraj Municipal Corporation, covering 76,960.51 hectares.
